The Battle of The Paddle Hawaii
features an offshore course designed to challenge competitor's technical,
athletic and surfing skills. Elite Race competitors must ride stock class
(12'6" or shorter) SUP boards and must complete three (3) laps (approximate
total distance of 5.0 miles) of an off shore course circuit. Each lap will
also include an exchange area where competitors must beach their boards for a
short run around a flagged course.
The Elite Race is open to both men & women competitors.
Start:
The Elite Race will begin with a beach start. Paddlers must follow the
Beachmaster/starter's instructions. Final start instructions for the men and
women Elite Race will be announced prior to the start of the race.
Finish:
After rounding the last buoy with the left shoulder, paddlers will finish in a
standing position, run through the exchange area to the finish line carrying
their paddle. The board will be left on the shore. Each paddler must cross the
finish line to receive a finish time and placing. Any shifting or hassling for
position in the funnel at the finish line will result in disqualification.
Competitors must not leave the finish area until their place, name and number,
has been recorded by the scorer. Please make sure to return the electronic
timing device to tag collection.
Board Certification:
All boards will be measured and certified on Sparky's SUP table before being allowed into the
Elite Race. Boards must be 12'6" Stock with fixed rudders and of a
mono-hull design. Sparky's SUP Table will be located close to the Board
Storage Area. After certification, each board will be issued a 'Sparky Approved'
Rainbow Sandal decal.
Sparky Approved Rainbow Sandals decals
must be displayed on all Elite Race boards. Please place decal on the
upper top deck section of your board. Failure to have the decal will
result in disqualification.
SUP 12.6 CLASS Defined (by coalition of
CA & HI SUP committee):
·
Length - 12’6” ft maximum ( 381.0 cm ) Boards can be shorter.
·
Board Weight - No Weight Restriction.
·
Fins shall be fixed in place.
·
Board Design is Open, except Multi Hulls are not allowed.
·
Rudder(s) are not allowed.
·
Foil(s) are not allowed.
Competition Jerseys:
All competitors must wear their competition jersey at the start,
duration and finish of all events. Failure to so at any point will result in
disqualification. Please do not wear items that will obscure the numbers on
your jersey re: Camel Baks.
Beachmaster/starter: Shall be responsible for
officiating event start and finish.
Course Marshall: Shall be responsible officiating
the race from the water.
Boardmaster: Shall be responsible for
managing and officiating the board handlers and board handler area.
Protests:
A written protest must be filed within 15 minutes of the last competitor finishing the event.
Protests must be filed with either the Beachmaster or Course Marshall. The
Beachmaster, Course Marshall and associated event officials shall determine the
outcome of any protest filed.
Course:
The course is around all buoys as directed by the Beachmaster/starter. At no time during
the race may a competitor impede another competitor. Unsportsmanlike
conduct/actions will result in disqualification. Any competitor failing to
round all buoys will be disqualified from the race.
Paddlers must complete three (3) laps around the designated course and the run through the
exchange area. Event race distance is approximately 5.0 miles. At the finish,
competitors will leave their board on shore and run through the exchange area to
the finish line in control of their paddle.
SUP - You Must Be Standing - 5 Five Stroke Rule:
If a competitor falls, he will be allowed 5 strokes to get back
on his or her feet and stand up. This rule is in effect so a paddler does not
achieve an advantage by not standing up. Each competitor must complete the
course in a standing position on their board.
Exchange Area:
After rounding the last buoy with the left shoulder, paddlers must beach their craft and run
the designated sand course in control of their paddle. The paddler must re-enter
the paddling course between the designated markers after each running leg.
Handlers:
Each Elite Race competitor is required
to have (1) equipment handler that can re-position the competitors SUP craft for
the course re-entry.
Board handlers must stay within the
designated area until their competitor has rounded the last course buoy leading
up to the exchange area. Handlers must obey all instructions from the
Board Handler Marshall. Failure to comply will result in disqualification.

The Long Distance Race – Hawaii Kai Run
Sunday June 13
START 10:00 A.M.
The Long Distance Race – Hawaii Kai Run
will have three SUP craft categories (12’6” stock, 14 ft. and unlimited) and
will start from Maunalua Bay Beach Park and finish at Ft. DeRussy Beach Park
(approximate distance 9 miles).
Course:
The course is around all buoys as directed by the Beachmaster/starter. At no time during
the race may a competitor impede another competitor. Unsportsmanlike
behavior/actions will result in disqualification. Any competitor failing
to round all buoys will be disqualified from the race.
Paddlers must complete (1) length of the designated course. Event race total distance
approximately 9 miles. Exit water without board and finish through finish chute
with paddle in hand.
5 Five Stroke Rule:
If you fall you have 5 strokes to get back on your feet and stand up. This rule is in effect
so a paddler does not achieve an advantage by not standing up. You must
complete the course standing upon your board.
Start
The Age Group Race will have a WATER start. The paddler’s body shall be behind the starting
line as directed by the beachmaster & race starter.
Finish
After rounding the last buoy with the right shoulder, paddlers will finish in an upright
position in control of their paddle in the funnel finish set up on the sand. The
board is to be left on the shore. All competitors must cross the finish
line area to receive a finish time and placing. Any shifting or hassling
for position in the funnel will result in disqualification. Competitors must not
leave the finish area until their place, name and number, has been recorded by
the scorer. And must return their electronic device to tag collection
Beachmaster/starter: Shall be responsible for officiating event start
and finish.
Course Marshall:
Shall be responsible officiating the race from the water.

The Open Age-Group Race
Saturday June 12
START 1:00 P.M.
The Age-Group Race will have four SUP
craft categories (surfboard class, 12’6” stock, 14 ft. and unlimited) and will
paddle 1 lap (approximate distance 4 miles) around the marked course.
Race course will be set depending on
prevailing conditions.
Course:
Paddlers must complete one (1)
lap - 1 lap on the green arrow approximately 4.0 miles around the
designated course. There will be no run required.
Exit water without board and finish
through finish chute with paddle in hand.
The course is around all buoys as directed by the Beachmaster/starter. At no time during
the race may a competitor impede another competitor. Unsportsmanlike
conduct/actions will result in disqualification. Any competitor failing to
round all buoys will be disqualified from the race.
At the finish, leave your board on shore, run through exchange area to the finish line in
control of your paddle.
Start:
The Age Group Race will have a WATER start.
Paddlers will enter the ocean between the (2) designated markers. The starting line will be designated
by the Beachmaster and posted at the event site.
The Open Age-Group Race will be started in consecutive heats determined
by SUP class and/or Beachmaster.
Finish:
After rounding the last buoy with the
right shoulder, paddlers will finish in an upright position, run through the
exchange area to the finish line in control of your paddle. The board is
to be left on the shore. You must cross the finish line area to receive a
finish time and placing. Any shifting or hassling for position in the
funnel will result in disqualification. Competitors must not leave the
finish area until their place, name and number, has been recorded by the scorer.
Please make sure to return the electronic device to tag collection.

The SUP Surf Relay Race
Sunday June 13
START 4:00 P.M.
The Battle of The Paddle features an offshore course

Surf Relay Race will be made up of four (4) person teams with at least one (1)
female per team. The SUP Surf Relay Race will be contested on stock (12'6"
or under) SUP boards and will compete four (4) laps of an off-shore circuit that
will also include an exchange area where competitors must beach their equipment
for a short sand run around a flagged course
Each member of the relay team must
complete (1) lap of the course in relay fashion.
Only one (1) board can be used for the
SUP Surf Relay race. In case of equipment malfunction or damaged equipment
the relay team may use a back up board to complete the race.
Course:
The course is around all buoys as
directed by the Beachmaster/starter. At no time during the race may a
competitor impede another competitor. Unsportsmanlike conduct/actions will
result in disqualification. Any competitor failing to round all buoys will
be disqualified from the race.
Each relay team member must complete four (4) laps around designated
course and through the exchange area. At the finish, competitors will leave
their boards on shore and run through exchange area to the finish line in
control of their paddle.
Each relay team member must complete the
full lap on the course and run through the exchange area to tag their next team competitor
before starting the next lap.

Relay Race will be announced prior to the race start time.

The boards are to be left on the shore. Each team's fourth and final
paddler must cross the finish line area to receive a finish time and placing.
Any shifting or hassling for position in the funnel will result in
disqualification. Competitors must not leave the finish area until their
place, team name and number, has been recorded by the scorer. There will be a
collection point for each paddler's tag so please make sure to return the
electronic device to this tag collection.
